Laser crystals serve as gain media for solid-state lasers. Typically, they consist of a single crystal doped with rare-earth ions, which are responsible for the laser process. A high-quality laser crystal is characterized by its high optical purity, the high surface quality (approx. λ/8) as well as the correct doping concentration, which depends on the application. Depending on the requests, laser crystals are available in different shapes and forms. Frequently used geometries are cylinders, rods, prisms, or discs.
